Mammoth
Lakes
The busy
hub of Mono County, Mammoth Lakes is a full- service mountain resort
town set in a forested valley beneath spectacular granite crags. Named
after a gold mine that operated here in the 1870s, Mammoth's rise
to fame came decades later as visitors discovered world-class skiing
at Mammoth Mountain.
Today,
with a ski season extending to early summer and a full slate of outdoor
activities and events in summer and fall, the town is bustling most
of the year.
Winter
fun extends beyond the slopes of Mammoth Mountain, with cross country
skiing and snowmobile trails, snow-shoeing, dog sledding, ice skating
and snowplay.
As summer
comes into its own, visitors turn to camping and fishing in Mammoth
Lakes Basin, along with hiking, boating, mountain biking, rock climbing,
horseback riding, golf and tennis. Adding to this core of summer recreation,
Mammoth offers art festivals, concerts and sporting events.
The Mammoth
Lakes area is packed with sightseeing destinations such as Devils
Postpile National Monument, Minaret Vista, Rainbow Falls, Minaret
Falls, Mammoth Museum, historic mine sites and scenic gondola rides
to Mammoth Mountain's 11,053-ft. summit. A full range of accommodations,
shops and restaurants will make your stay in Mammoth memorable.
